Beginners Golf Club Sets
January 10, 2008
Knowing what clubs to use can be hard for any golfer, regardless of if they are new to the game or an avid player. Choosing from various clubs and golf club sets can be very hard since there are so many choices out there.
Basic golf club sets are all that are needed in order to play the game. A basic set includes various 3 to 9 irons, three woods, a sand wedge, a pitching wedge, and a putter. As you get better, you may want to add more clubs. But remember, a standard golf bag only holds 14 clubs at one time. Before you can choose what clubs you want to add to your set, you must determine what your playing level is.
A golfer with a low-handicap has various clubs to choose from. He or she would have one driver and no less than 1 fairway wood, which is usually a 3 wood. Lower irons will benefit this type of golfer the most since they may be hard to hit with, but are easiest to control.
The low-handicap golfer should also have at least 3 wedges, such as a lob or approach wedge, a pitching wedge, or a sand wedge. There should be no more than a difference of 4 degrees between the wedges.
A golfer with a mid-handicap usually has an average score of one over par for each hole played, with a handicap in the 11-20 range. This type of golfer should have a driver, a 3 wood, a 5 wood, and even a 7 or 9 wood. Irons 3 through 9 are usually recommended, but not the 2 iron which is often difficult to use for consistent hits.
A sand wedge, a pitching wedge, and an approach or lob wedge are best for the mid-handicap golfer.
A golfer with a high-handicap is usually a beginner or someone who doesn’t play often enough to have a perfected game. This golfer doesn’t necessarily need a driver, but should use a 3 wood to tee off, and also a 7 wood and a 9 wood for easier hits. As with the other handicap levels, an approach or lob wedge, as well as a sand wedge and a pitching wedge are recommended.
If you have trouble deciding which handicap level you fall into, or which clubs you should include in your set, don’t hesitate to ask a professional or your friends/acquaintances for help. Basic golf club sets aren’t easy to choose from and you should welcome any help you can get.

golf is an easy game…yeah right! But maybe someone knows how to get it right?
