Golf, despite what non players might tell you, is a very serious sport that can lead to very serious injuries if a person doesn’t prepare properly. The amount of walking, of swinging, and bending in a normal golf game can lead to pulls and strains to just about anyone. To prevent such occurrences, here are some great golf warm-up exercises to try before you take to the links.
For many people, their version of some golf warm-up exercises is to simply put in a few swings at the driving range. Of course, if you watch most of the professionals prepare for their game, you’ll see that they go through a true warm up regimen. One of the best golf warm up exercises to start with is the simple arm circle.
To perform the arm circles correctly is a pretty easy process. The first step is to raise your arms so that your shoulders, elbows, and fingertips form a straight line. You should look like the letter T. Start with small circles, and gradually increase until you reach the full range of motion for your arms. Your hands should feel light, and the movements should be moderate. After about twenty seconds, switch directions and begin again.
Another great choice for your starting golf warm up exercises is that of the overhead extension. This stretch is a great way for prepare your shoulders for a better position at the top of your back swing. It also improves the functional range of motion in finish position or the follow through. In addition, this golf warm-up exercise is fairly easy to do. Simply grab the club just outside your shoulder width, and hold the club over your head with arms extended. With your feet shoulder width apart, bring the club down to the legs and raise it back up again.
With the amount of twisting that your body will go through, stretching out the muscles of the arms and trunks is an essential part to any great golf game. One of the easiest golf warm-up exercises to perform is also a great way to stretch those oblique muscles that are so much a part of everything you do during the golf swing. Simply stretch the club over your head and lean your body to one side, allowing the opposite side to stretch. Hold for a moment, and lean to the other side, still keeping your arms shoulder width apart.
Another one of the golf warm up exercises that is a great way to improve your game is the golf rotations. Place the club over the shoulders and behind your head. Next, grasp each end of the golf club and assume the golf posture. Rotate the upper body back and forth, keeping the lower body quite still. This helps to stretch the core of your body, and allow the muscles to be properly stretched.
Now that your arms and torso are properly stretched, the next set of golf warm up exercises is focused on your legs. Stand with your legs shoulder width apart, and stretch down to reach your toes. This golf warm up exercise is a great way to stretch out your lumbar before you do all that walking. Next, perform a few partial squats. Stand with feet shoulder width apart, and lower your body while bending at the knees. Repeat for at least ten times. This is one of those golf warm up exercises that is great for increasing overall circulation through the body, and limbering up your knee joints.
These are just a few of the golf warm up exercises that you can do a few minutes before your game to loosen up. The next time you set out to play a game of golf, try some of these exercises, and you’ll definitely see a marked improvement in your enjoyment of the game.
